Single Malt And Scotch Whiskey Book
World Whiskey had BEAUTIFUL large pictures of the various brands that I might actually have some chance of affording, and finding on the shelf. The Michael Jackson book was and ultimate authority, but no pictures and tons of scotches that I will never see and could never afford.
Laphroaig is a Scotch Whisky distillery on the western Scottish island of Islay and one of the best known of all the single malts. It is marketed as "the most richly flavored of all Scotch whiskies" and is known for its powerfu...
Malt whisky is made of malted barley, and grain whisky uses other grains like corn or wheat. Most of the time, a whisky is blended from different distilleries hence the name blended scotch, but if a malt whisky is produced in a single distillery, we get something extraordinary called a single malt.
The Auchentoshan Three Wood is matured in American bourbon casks, Oloroso sherry and Pedro Ximenez Sherry casks all of which give it a unique flavor profile with significant complexity. It was the winner of the Double Gold Medal in the category of single malts up to 12 years at the 2013 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
Excellent article I like that you have encouraged new users to add some ice, Scotch can turn off many new drinkers not only with its taste, but with the snobbish attitude many display around it. After drinking Scotches for over 25 years it still puts me off if a bartender gives a snooty attitude when I ask for water or even ice, not all Scotch even some single malts are from a fine casks. I prefer to have my good Scotches at home or at a bar which has an extensive scotch selection and tasting night. When I am at an event in a hotel conference room and order a scotch from one of those mobile bars I am not looking for a Scotch experience just a social drink no attitude required. That is my rant so on another note I would like to see an article on Martinis and please include the Manhattan in that mix as it is my favorite social drink.
Good article my wife and I have just returned from our yearly trip to Scotland tasting whiskey there are always new ones to find ,I am very fond of Dalwhinèy winter gold single malt this distillery is high in the highlands and cools its spirit in old style worm tubs outside and in the coldest part of the winter the tasting of the spirit changes and is bottled as winter gold it definitely has a special somthing
Thanks to industry guru Jim Murray and his internationally acclaimed annual Whisky Bible, the Japanese are now running out of their own single malt and people have fought in Toronto liquor stores to grab the last bottle of his World Whisky of the Year.
So, if you are in a hurry and have only moments to make a quick decision about buying a whisk(e)y, then if it is bourbon, rye and other American whiskeys you are looking for, the North American edition now lists those at the front of the book lining up the brands alphabetically as well as by State. And this followed directly by the Canada section, making this edition of the Whiskey Bible even more North American user friendly.
As a complete novices to both collecting and drinking whiskey, i find the whiskey bible an excellent addition to the bookcase.May you continue in your efforts to keep us all up to date.Best WishesYnot the Novice
I am very well acquainted with Indian single malt whiskies, especially with Paul John as I often have the chance to taste it. Rampur is the third single malt whisky brand that emerged from India however it is also made by Radico Khaitan, which is the largest Indian alcoholic beverage producer. Like many others, they also produce vodka, brandy, rum and whisky for the local Indian market. This review will be on Rampur Double Cask Indian Single Malt Whisky.
Double Cask became a usual term in the whisky industry often referring to whisky being aged in two different barrels. In this case, Rampur single malt is aged in ex-bourbon and Sherry barrels from European oak.
A truly impressive single malt from the Indian distillers. Rampur actually did a very good job with this whisky. The balance throughout the tasting is very much satisfactory and lingering at the back palate is sublime.
What I would love to see more is the continuation of tropical fruits after the nose. From the palate, the single malt starts to take the shape of a Scotch, which is not a bad thing at all. Though I feel, the Indian character that is felt on the nose is just so unique, and one wants to feel that for a longer time.

Cask strength, floor malting, tannins...even the most whiskey-literate person you know would be forgiven for getting tripped up on the distillers lingo. This guidebook will give them a refresher on all terms that matter in whiskey-making.
The Dead Rabbit is a world-renowned bar hiding in downtown Manhattan, with an ethos built on the lore of Irish gangsters and Irish whiskey. Its cocktail recipe book is full of utterly astounding cocktails, as well as a nefarious tale of blood and revenge (and drinking) told in graphic novel form. You have to read it to believe it.
Blended scotch accounts for 90 percent of the Scottish whisky market and most of us would be very familiar with the brands associated with this form such as Dewar's, J&B, Johnnie Walker and Bells. This is simply a blend of malt whisky and grain whisky wherein a master blender marries two or more barrels of whisky to achieve the flavour notes they are seeking.
Irish Whiskey comes in single malt, single pot still, single grain, and blended forms. Three of those four we already know from the above descriptions of Scottish Whiskys but where Ireland goes out on her own is with the single pot still form.
The difference between single malt and single pot still is that, whereas single malts are made from 100% malted barley, single pot still whiskey is made with both malted and unmalted (green) barley. This makes a huge difference to the flavour and has been compared to the contrast between raw and cooked apples. An example of single pot still Irish Whiskey is Dingle Single Pot Still
